I dare to say all of them. The sad thing is no one wants to talk about it. I'm thankful I have a church that sees this as a has a problem that needs to be fixed. I am a believer with a history of wrestling with sexual integrity, specifically in the area of Internet pornography. I had no knowledge of this book prior to a moment alone in a bookstore where this book's title literally grabbed me from its shelf. Taking that to be a prompting from the Holy Spirit, I attempted to be obedient and sought out this book for the app. Very thankful I did. I still need to process a lot of what I read. He is very critical of the twelve step model of recovery, which is a model I'm rather familiar with, and the no nonsense approach to interpreting severing spiritual limbs for the sake of the whole's salvation flies in the face of our modern culture's obsession with compromise. I'm not sure where I've landed on everything this book says, but here's my takeaway stop creating and inhabiting environments conducive to your struggle, start feeding your soul with Word and prayer; quit being so absorbed with your own desires, and focusing being present in the lives of those God has called you to serve.
If you're looking at this book, there's a reason. It is not politically correct. It will offend you. But most importantly, it will point you to The Word of God and will spare you no justification for any tolerance of sin.
As far as other reviews complaining about the vivid nature of the author's stories, I humbly argue that it is needed. How ironic that men with our battles are so willing to indulge twisted fantasy, yet can't stomach a hard, truthful look at what lust truly is. I felt God move me to let Him deal with any trigger then and there, as the Spirit was very much present while reading this.
If you're looking for all the answers for a quick cure you will be disappointed. However if you're looking for a book that will encourage you to live a disciplined life this is useful.
Having given myself over to pornography for over a decade, I've read countless books on how to overcome in this area. I've also sought out several counsellors and groups that deal with sexual addiction. I can tell you that nothing I've read on the subject has been more impactful than this book. This book puts sin in its proper place. This is a no nonsense approach to overcoming sin in your life. Freedom is available to those who want it and this book is an awesome resource to guide you back on the right path. Check out the purity for life app as well. They have a lot of great resources.
It was the wisdom in this book that finally helped me sort through the confusion that had woven its knots in my life for the past 40 years. I did seek counseling as well, a knowledgable man of God to be accountable to, and to hold my feet to the fire. But this is the work he chose for me. He had me purchase the accompanying workbook that goes with it. (I highly recommend you do the same). I diligently went through just two chapters a month, and thoroughly answered the questions recording my answers in the notes facility in the version of the main book for future reference. Each chapter brought a new tool of understanding and defense that resulted in an encouragement that I had never before attained. No more am I waiting for 'the next great pulpit message' to finally give me what I need to be free. God's grace is sufficient for me, and this book, and my counselor, were the the tools He used to lead me through my mess of a life back to His abiding grace.
God has work for you to do. Don't let your pride or your shame keep you from seeking godly counsel. Find a pure man of God and have him help you work through this book. Christ died for more than your repeated stumbling attempts at purity. You deserve to be free!
Aside from the rather explicit examples which I still can't determine whether or not are necessary especially for men struggling with this issue which is about 99% of men today -- Christian or not)it hits the nail on the head instead of dancing around the issue. Some books teach methods of dealing with the temptation where this book exposes the root of that temptation. After 15 yrs of this treatment from my husband(even milder than any of the descriptions within the pages of this book I determined to leave him. I had tried to get him to read this book years before I got to this point but it wasn't until I was ready to take our children & walk out the door that he woke up to what this does to families. Almost two years has passed and the changes have gone from rapid & immediate needed changes to the building of a new foundation with which to live by. My husband accredits this book with really reaching the heart of the issue. As a matter of fact he gave his copy to his brother & this is the second one he had me purchase b/c he wanted a "refresher" to make sure the enemy hadn't regained any footholds. He has really been freed & though he is still working on "renewing his mind" and replace all the years of garbage with the Truth this has definitely been a life changing, marriage & family saving tool. He is now able to take responsibility for his struggle instead of blaming me. Which has caused him to take responsibility in practically every other area of our relationship. He has also gone from treating me like meat, an object, or his toy to treating me like a partner & helpmate who is a valuable & integral part of his life! It has truly exposed that sin that the enemy was using to destroy us & has changed the course of history for our relationship & for the future of our children. Thank You, Jesus & thank you Mr. Gallagher!
