Suck it up, America, The Tough Choices We Face for Real Healthcare Reform is a unique combination, a blend of experience and rational analysis which reveals the personal impact of healthcare policies and gives insight into the real reasons why physicians treat people the way they do. It also points out the unspoken truths that we will never reduce healthcare costs until we deliver (and demand) less and that a large portion of the care we render is useless or even
Suck It Up America The Tough Choices We Face For Real Healthcare Reform Md Thomas Doyle 9781257519026 Books
Dr. Thomas Doyle writes a poignant and crafted account of healthcare in America. Told by an experienced Emergency Medicine Physician, he writes with a sense of purpose in describing and telling stories about the problems associated with true healthcare reform. He states his claim by sharing stories from the frontlines of healthcare-the Emergency Department. These are not glossed over or glamorous by any means--these are true life, in your face situations that can make someone who is not in healthcare gasp in disbelief. But for those of us in healthcare, while reading these stories we are shaking our heads in complete agreement. As a registered nurse, I could recall similar situations and as I continued reading, felt as if I was standing next to him re-living these accounts. He intertwines real-life stories with the issues facing healthcare in America. The opening story alone is enough to make a host of emotions stand up and take notice. The stories range from patients who attempt to take their own life to an elderly, dying man with his tearful wife by his side. Dr. Doyle exhibits his compassion along with his realistic outlook of healthcare. He suggests changes that need to be done if we want true healthcare reform. He does not have all the answers, but suggests many interesting concepts that will make you ponder afterwards why we continue to do things that simply do not work. In chapter 6, appropriately titled, "Parasitology" a.k.a. the Insurance Company (the titles alone will grasp your attention--I do not want to give too many away and ruin the surprise) he discusses insurance companies and why these institutions, in their present state, will not work in healthcare reform. Dr. Doyle is on the frontlines along with many other physicians, nurses, respiratory therapists, and paramedics who understand what works and does not work in healthcare.
Dr. Doyle has written many pieces for the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette and he is honest and straightforward in his descriptions of what needs to be considered for healthcare in America. Dr. Doyle is an example of who should be working with our politicians to reform healthcare. I highly recommend this book to anyone concerned about healthcare reform in our country; and for those of you who are not--you truly need to read this book.

Suck It Up America The Tough Choices We Face For Real Healthcare Reform Md Thomas Doyle 9781257519026 Books Reviews
A very different perspective on healthcare than I have seen before. I very much enjoyed reading it and love the ideas proposed.
I think that everyone would benefit from reading this.
This is a must read for all Physicians, healthcare administrators, policy makers and most of all patients. It really gives a broad overview of what is wrong with the healthcare system. We need to work together to fix it.
I am in my final semester of my Masters in Healthcare Administration program. Through all my papers and classes, I have taken close review of many of the topics in this book, and just how broken our healthcare system is. Each chapter is extremely succinct and gives a tremendous and a candid viewpoint about our health care system.
The author's tone was soap-boxish, yet entertaining. Everyone should read this book for a great dose of reality (especially our politicians that listen to bank accounts instead)!
Doyle's efficient style will be familiar to physicians and comfortable for the lay public as he spells out the simple truths, at least as I (a now non-practicing physician) see it. Not only an important read for the average person - if they are ready to read the unvarnished truth, but this book should be in the hands of every policy-wonk in the country. It's engaging, fast, and even has little health tips at the beginning of every chapter that re-enforce one of the key points Each of us has to take on more responsibility in understanding and managing our own health. Difficult decisions lay ahead, it's time to learn and make the tough choices.
This is an ER doctor's description of how misguided health care policies have resulted in truly intolerable conditions in today's emergency rooms. Those who have worked in emergency rooms will instantly recognize the things he describes, while those who get their information from politicians, bureaucrats and pundits will, I think, be genuinely surprised. You might not agree with all of his recommendations for reform, but I think this book helps the reader understand the true nature of the problem.
This is no dry position paper. It is actually enjoyable reading. The author introduces each topic with an anecdote from his ER and uses interesting real-life examples throughout.
